Editor's Note:
As we have reached a pause within the story, I feel the need to address concerns regarding safety, security, and ownership. I offer the following, in the form of an open letter.
Dear Reader,
Five Dollar Wrench is not an instruction manual. It is a cautionary tale about the importance of security, including offline security, which is all too often overlooked.
Bitcoin owners have been robbed by friends and lovers, even family. These crimes tend to go unreported due to shame, but also because the victims usually don't know what happened. Most think they were hacked online, when the truth is, someone found the paper or metal backup of their Bitcoin seed words.
People get robbed by people they know.
Not always, but often.
The true goal of Five Dollar Wrench is to help you stay safe, by providing examples of how security failures happen and how trust can be misplaced.
I want to make the following clear:
We do not endorse or condone theft.
Owning Bitcoin means being your own bank.
Securing your Bitcoin is your job.
The easiest place to begin?
Keep it secret.
Secrecy helps you keep it safe.
Sincerely,
Elliot Terrell
